Eau de parfum, cologne or extract? How fragrances are classified

¿Eau de parfum, colonia o extracto? Así se clasifican los perfumes

There are perfumes that last from morning well into the night and others that disappear halfway through, just as there are people who shine with a subtle fragrance, whilst you find it falls short. Did you know that what makes the difference is the concentration of the perfume? Yes, that word you see on the labels —eau de parfum, eau de toilette, perfume extract— isn't there just to sound nice in French. It means much more than you imagine.

In this article we're going to unravel this perfumery language that seems cryptic, but is actually pure common sense. If you've ever wondered what type of perfume is best for you, how long it will last or which has the best staying power, you're about to find out.

What sets each type of perfume apart

What distinguishes one perfume from another isn't just the aroma. It's, above all, the amount of aromatic essence it carries mixed with alcohol and water. That concentration determines three key things: the intensity, duration and lasting power of the perfume on the skin.

And it's not the same thing as a cologne and an eau de parfum. Although they may smell similar, their behaviour on your skin is very different. A perfume extract can last up to 24 hours and have an enveloping trail, whilst a body mist disappears in barely an hour. The same goes for how the perfume evolves: the higher the concentration, the more layers and nuances you'll notice over time.

Understanding the classification of perfumes according to their concentration is essential to get it right in your purchase and also to know when to use each type of fragrance. Because a night perfume shouldn't be worn the same way as one for work or for a weekend getaway.

Classification by concentration: from the most intense to the lightest

Each type of perfume has its concentration and its charm, but also its peculiarities. Pay attention, because here's the key to choosing well.

Perfume extract

Also known as "parfum" outright, it is the purest form of perfumery. Its concentration ranges between 20% and 30% aromatic essence, which makes it the most long-lasting perfume with the best staying power. It's intense, deep and is usually applied in very small amounts, only on pulse points such as the neck, wrists or behind the ears. Ideal for special occasions, long nights or when you want to leave an unforgettable impression. It's not for everyday use, but when you do, it makes a difference.

Eau de parfum

Here you'll find a good balance between duration and intensity. With a concentration of between 15% and 20%, eau de parfum is versatile, elegant and quite long-lasting: it can accompany you throughout an entire day if you apply it correctly. Which is why it's the favourite of many for everyday use, and also for events where you want to smell good without being excessive. If you've ever wondered what eau de parfum means, now you know: it's one of the most balanced ways to enjoy a fragrance with character.

Eau de toilette

The famous EDT has between 8% and 12% aromatic concentration. It's lighter, it evaporates sooner, but it's usually more affordable in price. That makes it an excellent option to wear during the day, especially in warm climates or spaces where you don't want to overpower the atmosphere. If you're wondering what eau de toilette is, it's basically a perfume that is fresh, comfortable and easy to apply if you want to maintain the fragrance throughout the day.

Eau de cologne

Better known as "cologne", although in perfumery its meaning is more technical. Its concentration ranges between 3% and 5%, which makes it very light and volatile, one of the main differences between cologne and perfume. It lasts briefly (between 1 and 2 hours), but provides an immediate freshness. It's usually worn after a shower or as a refreshing fragrance to revive your spirits. In reality, its role is more that of a gesture of freshness than a traditional perfume with evolution and depth.

Body mist / splash

The gentlest category of all. It has minimal concentration, below 3%, and therefore its duration is very short. It's designed for very specific moments: after the gym, when you get out of the shower or to feel clean and fragrant without too much intensity. Don't expect a trail or evolution. It's like an aromatic sigh, perfect for very sensitive skin or for those who can't tolerate strong scents.

Which one to choose based on use, occasion and skin type?

This is where it all makes sense: how do you know what type of perfume to wear, when and why?

If your skin tends to absorb a lot of perfume (dry skin, for example), you'll benefit from a higher concentration. The more natural oil your skin has, the better holding power any fragrance will have. So if you notice that perfumes don't last long on you, it's not that they're poor quality: perhaps you need an eau de parfum instead of an eau de toilette.

For everyday use, a good eau de toilette or light eau de parfum is ideal. For important meetings or events where you need to make an impression, go for a perfume extract or an intense eau de parfum. And if you just want something refreshing after a shower or an afternoon at the beach, then cologne or body mist will work better for you.

And remember: the intensity of a perfume doesn't make it better or worse, just different. There are days when you need a subtle presence, almost imperceptible, and others when you want to dominate the scene with your scent. It all depends on the moment.

And in Arabian perfumes? How are they classified?

Arabian perfumes have a different magic. Their classification also starts from concentration, but with a different approach. They focus heavily on pure oil —the famous attar— which has a very high concentration, often without alcohol, and spectacular staying power. They are oily fragrances that are applied in small amounts and evolve slowly, envelopingly and very sensually.

These fragrances are usually loaded with intense notes such as oud, amber, musk or spices, which gives them a very powerful character. In many cases they don't fit into classic categories like eau de parfum or eau de toilette, because they're not formulated the same way. But generally speaking, Arabian perfumes have superior durability and projection, designed to impress and leave a lasting impression for hours (or days).

If you're drawn to the idea of a perfume that lasts all day, you should explore this category. Many of them are based on ancient formulas, inherited from the traditional perfumery of the Gulf and Middle East, where concentration is king and the trail is a statement of intent.

At Elixir Perfumes we know that a good perfume isn't just chosen for its aroma, but for how it behaves, how it makes you feel and how long it accompanies you. That's why we work with fragrances of different concentrations, including eau de parfum, intense extracts and also Arabian formulas with soul. If you want to discover which one is for you, start by exploring our collection of long-lasting perfumes.
